It is five years since
Core’s very first event, “Communicate to Persuade”, held at the Royal Society of
Edinburgh in January 2001. Later
this year, in the summer, we will celebrate the fifth anniversary of Core’s
first mediation.
In the coming weeks,
Core will pass the century mark in
completed mediations, half of these coming since the beginning of 2005. At
the time of writing, 5 of our panel mediators are engaged in mediations in the
space of 7 working days. How things have developed.
Our in-house and other
specialist training courses are constantly being updated and improved to meet
growing demand.
To celebrate our fifth birthday, we will hold our annual dinner again this year in May (Thursday 11th). Last year’s event was a great success and we hope to welcome an interesting guest or two for another fireside (or, as last year, barrel-side) chat.
Celebrating a sustained
period of growth necessitates looking forward. We are delighted to announce an
expansion of Core’s panel of mediators and facilitators in response to the
increased demand for our services both within and out-with
We are also delighted to
announce that the international dimension to our panel is enhanced by Bill Marsh of Conflict Management
International, one of the world’s leading advisers in mediation development and
a much sought after mediator, and Charles Dodson, a senior figure in the
mediation world in
Core offers a without commitment initial discussion or
meeting to help you to decide whether or not and, if so, how mediation can bring
benefits to a dispute or difference.
In December,
“The valuable process of mediation has forged co-operation
in place of confrontation and has seen a greater objective concentration on the
issues.… both parties have for the first time been able to express their
positions and views….without fear…”
Pamela Lyall
was quoted in the Scotsman’s preview of the year ahead on January 10. She
said:
"2005 was a breakthrough year
for mediation, especially in commercial, business, professional and
organisational disputes. In 2006, we would like to see Scottish courts more
active, like their counterparts in
This will free up the
courts to deal with cases which only judges can address and, at the same time,
enable businesses and individuals who have got disputes to get these resolved
much more quickly and efficiently. I'd also like to see law firms building on
the significant changes which many have already adopted in their approach to
helping clients solve problems at an early stage."
Business Insider magazine carried an extensive piece on mediation in its
January edition. Core was featured and “widely credited with significantly
raising the profile of mediation in
With two months to go, Core’s flagship course is already
more than two thirds subscribed, with a few more places left. We
are delighted to have a diverse and interesting group of people signed up for
the course. So far, they come from the length and breadth of Scotland, from Russia and England
– and
from the health sector, public service, commerce, banking, construction, legal
practice and athletics, to name a few!
The
dates are March 27- 30 for the
mediation skills module and April 19 -

Core
has established a small team of trained mediators with particular interest in
and awareness of health sector issues. The team is available, working
individually or alongside Core’s lead mediators, to assist in matters involving
internal management issues, GP practices, complaints, patient / doctor
relationships, medical negligence claims and other differences.
The
team includes Dr Robert Hendry, Dr Neil
Houston, Dr David Morton (all practitioners with a range of expertise and
experience in the health sector) and Olivia Giles, formerly a solicitor in
private practice, who has a special interest in the NHS.
Core
is committed to supporting local and international initiatives to enhance the
understanding of conflict resolution among young people – and more generally to
support young people in skills development. Initially, this includes maintaining
our links with the Diploma mediation workshops at
In
May, Core will launch its forum for young professionals who have trained as
mediators or who have a special interest in its development. As part of that
initiative, Core will offer a discounted place at an upcoming mediation course
for a young professional who could not otherwise take part and who shows special
aptitude for and interest in mediation. Please contact Kevin Paterson if you
are interested in this initiative.
