“The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make
a Big Difference” by Malcolm Gladwell (Little, Brown
and Company)
A familiar theme: we spend much of our time agonising over
grand plans – and not acting until we have all the pieces
of the design in place. The thrust of “The Tipping Point”
is that changes, even great changes, may result from the smallest
action – the “little things” mentioned in
the book’s sub title.
Citing examples from fashion, crime, disease and the media
of how apparently tiny events have had a profound impact on
human life, we are challenged to apply the concept to our
own lives.
• Where – and what – are the tipping points
that will bring about the changes we desire: in our work (client
base? profitability? enjoyment?), in our lives or in society?
• Can we concentrate our resources, however limited,
in the few key areas that matter?
• Can we find a way to make a lot out of a little?
• Can we give the right push, however slight, in the
right place, to tip the balance?
This is a book which forces us to consider how we think about
change – and to change the way we think.
Core Consulting follows the philosophy that marginal changes
can make a big impact; that the best are only marginally better
– but that it is at the margins that things really matter.
That little extra…….
